Bayview Senior Services
San Francisco, CA • Spring 2024
Our first screening of the semester took place in San Francisco at one of the Bayview Senior Homes. This screening was in collaboration with SF Links, a non-profit that supports the health and well-being of African Americans, who provided produce bags. Thank you to Angelique Tompkins, who connected us to this community. We screened a total of 21 patients, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of Cal VHIO or our physicians Dr. Anthony Muiru, Dr. Raymond Hsu, and Dr. Dana Larsen!
Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants
Oakland, CA • Spring 2024
For our second screening of the semester, we went to the Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants (CERI) with the help of Elijah Chhum and Kanley Spich, where we screened 50 patients! We had Dr. Anthony Muiru, Dr. Harini Sarathy, and Dr. Jesse Ikeme provide consultation for our patients, and we also had Cal VHIO help with Vietnamese translation. Thank you to all our volunteers.
Union City Chinese Bible Church
Union City, CA • Spring 2024
Thanks to Dr. Paul Cheng, who connected us with the church, we were able to host our third screening at Union City Chinese Bible Church with the guidance of Pastor Shen. We screened a total of 56 patients, and we couldn’t have done so without Dr. Raymond Hsu, who consulted on all our patients and Cal VHIO Mandarin department. Thank you to our volunteers.

Our fourth screening took place at Martin de Porres House of Hospitality, a free restaurant serving lunch six days a week. We collaborated with UC Berkeley’s Suitcase Clinic for our fifth screening at their General Clinic located in the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley. General Clinic Directors, Johnny Luu, Urmila Vudali, and Christie Bao, helped ensure everything went smoothly, and we screened 15 clients with their guidance. Thanks to our outreach team, we were able to produce new post-screening resources dedicated to the unhoused community. Nephrologist Dr. Jesse Ikeme of UCSF helped us have a successful evening!

Our final screening took place at Sri Sai Temple in Pleasanton. We screened a total of 27 patients, thanks to Rani, who helped guide us throughout the process. We had the help of our physicians Dr. Delphine Tuot, Dr. Dana Larsen, and Dr. Teresa Chen, who consulted our patients. We also really appreciate our renal dieticians Kayoko Zahn, Jian Li, Amy Shiau, and Lisa Huang, who talked to our patients during the Wellness Station.

Our final screening took place at Sri Sai Temple in Pleasanton. We screened a total of 27 patients, thanks to Rani, who helped guide us throughout the process. Our last screening of the semester was held at Bethlehem MBC with the help of Sisters Dewanda Joseph and Lisa Johnson. We were joined at physician consultations by Dr. Anthony Muiru of UCSF, as well as Dr. Sijie Zheng of Kaiser Permanente. On this beautiful Saturday, we were able to provide services for 12 patients!

Ephesians Church of God in Christ
Richmond, CA • Fall 2023
This was Berkeley KDSAP’s first time hosting a kidney screening in Contra Costa County, and Richmond, specifically, and it was held at Ephesians COGIC with the guidance of Pastor Louis Spicer. With the help of our Outreach team, we were able to produce novel post-screening resources for the city of Richmond! Nurse practitioner, Rahitha Thomas, was present to provide consultation and she, along with our volunteers, helped screen 16 members of their church and local community.

Our third screening of the semester was held on short notice with the help of Mike Jones. Dr. Delphine Tuot and Dr. Mitra Jamshidian were able to provide consultations to 10 patients, and so was dietician Adriana Maza. We appreciate all our volunteers who came to help out, and we hope that we provided their community with a needed resource.

At our second screening this fall, we were able to, once again, partner with SEACC, and Diana Vuong, to host a kidney screening for their community. Along with the kind staff, Carina Tu, Han Pham, and Hieu Pham from UC Berkeley VHIO helped translate into Vietnamese. With the help of Dr. Dana Larsen, Dr. Meghana Eswarappa, Dr. Salitha Sunderrajan, and Dr. Delphine Tout, we had an amazing morning, and helped provide a valuable resource to 34 community members!
Acts Full Gospel Church

We kicked off the semester with a kidney screening at Acts Full Gospel Church in Oakland and screened a total of 25 patients! We were also provided oral hygiene baggies from America’s ToothFairy at UC Berkeley, which we handed out to their community. Dr. Paul Brakeman and Dr. Raymond Hsu of UCSF had conversations with patients at the physician consult station, and dieticians, Adriana Maza and Kayoko Zahn shared their knowledge at our Wellness station. Thank you to all those who volunteered to make this event possible!

For our fifth and last screening of the semester, we stayed close to home and conducted a screening on campus in the Social Sciences Building. Serving a total of 20 patients, we couldn’t have done it without the help of Dr. Eric Lai who dedicated his morning and afternoon to serve our community.

The fourth screening of the semester was in partnership with Shiva-Vishnu Temple in Livermore. We screened 57 of their community members. A big thank you to Dr. Teresa Chen, Dr. Dana Larsen, Dr. Harini Sarathy, and Dr. Laalasa Varanasi for their expertise and contributions at this busy screening.
South Berkeley Senior Center

For our third screening of the semester, we stayed within the local community and partnered with South Berkeley Senior Center. With the help of Cal VHIO and our volunteers, we screened 19 patients. A shower of gratitude to Dr. Jesse Ikeme for holding down the fort and dedicating his day to help our organization serve the local senior community.

We returned to San Francisco for our second screening of the semester, partnering with On Lok PACE 30th St Senior Center. Serving a total of 40 participants, we were assisted once again by Cal VHIO who helped with interpretation. South San Francisco Latin-America Seventh-Day Adventist Church

For our first screening of the spring semester, we partnered with South San Francisco Latin-America Seventh-Day Adventist Church. We screened 24 patients with the help of Cal VHIO’s Spanish department. We want to extend our thanks to Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Jesse Ikeme, and Dr. Dana Larsen from UCSF for gifting us their time and consulting patients on their kidney health.
Chinese for Christ Church of Hayward

For our second screening of the fall semester, we partnered with the Chinese for Christ Church of Hayward. We screened 63 patients with the help of Dr. Paul Cheng who helped connect us with the community along with Cal VHIO and the church community members who helped us interpret. For our first in-person screening since the pandemic, we partnered with First Morning Light Chinese Christian Church to screen 68 of their community members. We thank Dr. Paul Cheng who helped connect us with the community and the church community members who volunteered to help us break the language barrier with the predominantly Chinese demographic. Also, a big thank you to Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Delphine Tuot, Dr. Radha Chirumamilla, and Dr. Alex Dinh for giving us their time to conduct physician consultations at the screening.
Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay
Oakland, California • Spring 2020
KDSAP partnered with VACCEB to have our screening as the center-point of their annual health fair. We were able to screen 46 patients at the health fair with the help of Cal VHIO to help us interpret. Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Anna Malkina, Dr. Chi Chu, and Dr. Diana Kwong were our volunteer physicians present at the screening. This was our only screening of the year, and our remaining two planned screenings for Spring 2020 were cancelled due to COVID-19.

For our fifth and last screening of the year, we again partnered with OACC for our third screening at their location. We screened 42 patients who went through all of our screening stations and the final physicians consult with the help of Cal VHIO who sent interpreters to help with language barriers. Dr. Delphine Tuot, Dr. Guity Farahmand, Dr. Ken Sutha, Dr. Lakshmi L Ganesan, and Dr. Harini Sarathy were our volunteer physicians present to offer their help.

SEACC's community was predominantly Vietnamese, and we thank all of our interpreters from Cal VHIO who were there to help break the language barrier. Our final screening of the spring semester involved a trip down to the South Bay Area. At the Menlo Park branch of the Home of Christ Church, we screened 30 of their community members. The first screening of the year was at the SF Korean Center, where we screened 15 patients from their community. Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr.Delphine Tuot, Dr. Katherine Wang, Dr. Julie Kuniyoshi, and Dr. Christopher Carlos were our physician volunteers who were present at the screening for our patients.

For our fifth and final screening of 2018, we partnered again with the Home of Christ Church in Cupertino. We were able to screen 60 of their community members, a busy day. With the help of Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Julie Kuniyoshi, Dr. Rafia Chaudhry, and our very own Dr. Li-Li Hsiao (the founder of KDSAP from Harvard) who paid our chapter a visit for this screening.

UC Berkeley KDSAP sent members to volunteer at the NKF (National Kidney Foundation) screening that took place at the Serramonte Shopping Center in Daly City for our second screening of the semester. NKF had their own physicians present, and we were able to help them screen 60 patients that day. It was a valuable experience to be volunteering with the National Kidney Foundation to learn how to improve our own screenings.

We provided health screening services to 30 patients, and they were all able to have their one-on-one, private consultations with Dr. Delphine Tuot, Dr. Lekha Tummalapalli, Dr. Shelley Cheng, and Dr. Jon Nazir.

We were able to screen 68 people at our second screening at Home of Christ Church in Cupertino. SF Korean Center

The first screening of the year was at the SF Korean Center, where we screened 15 patients from their community. Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr.Delphine Tuot, Dr. Katherine Wang, Dr. Julie Kuniyoshi, and Dr. Christopher Carlos were our physician volunteers who were present at the screening for our patients.
Hope of Christ Church Cupertino
Cupertino, California • Fall 2018
For our fifth and final screening of 2018, we partnered again with the Home of Christ Church in Cupertino. We were able to screen 60 of their community members, a busy day. With the help of Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Julie Kuniyoshi, Dr. Rafia Chaudhry, and our very own Dr. Li-Li Hsiao (the founder of KDSAP from Harvard) who paid our chapter a visit for this screening.
Serramonte Shopping Center
Daly City, California • Fall 2018
UC Berkeley KDSAP sent members to volunteer at the NKF (National Kidney Foundation) screening that took place at the Serramonte Shopping Center in Daly City for our second screening of the semester. NKF had their own physicians present, and we were able to help them screen 60 patients that day. It was a valuable experience to be volunteering with the National Kidney Foundation to learn how to improve our own screenings.

At OACC once again, we had our third screening of the year and first of the fall semester! 15 patients of the local community attended our screening, receiving their free health screening tests. Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Diana Kwong, and Dr. Ruth Dubin volunteered their time to give our patients their free physician consultations.

Our second screening of the semester involved our first visit to our now longtime partners at OACC, a primarily Mandarin and Cantonese speaking community! We provided health screening services to 30 patients, and they were all able to have their one-on-one, private consultations with Dr. Delphine Tuot, Dr. Lekha Tummalapalli, Dr. Shelley Cheng, and Dr. Jon Nazir.
Berkeley Chinese for Christ Church

At our first screening of the spring semester, we screened the members of the Berkeley Chinese for Christ Church. 15 patients attended our screening, and with the help of Dr. Delphine Tuot, Dr. Raymond Hsu, Dr. Salitha Sunderrajan, Dr. Elaine Ku, and Dr. Sam James we had an easy flow of patients who were able to consult our volunteer physicians.
Chaparral House

For our second screening of 2017, KDSAP had the pleasure of partnering with the Chaparral House to screen their community members. Over 30 patients were screened and were able to meet with our wonderful volunteer physicians, Dr. John Sy, Dr. Kirsten Johansen, Dr, Shira Roth, Dr. Fahmeedah Kamal, and Dr. Sri Lekha Tummalapalli.
Hope of Christ Church Cupertino

We were able to screen 68 people at our second screening at Home of Christ Church in Cupertino. We thank Dr. Kerry Cho, Dr. Michelle Estrella, Dr. Lynda Frassetto, Dr. Ramin Sam, Dr. Tara Chang, Dr. Xingxing Cheng, and Dr. Enrica Fung for volunteering their time on a weekend to help out with our screening, as well as the community for providing us with translators, nurses, and their full-hearted support!

At our very first screening, with the help of Dr. Hsiao, Dr. Tuot, Dr. Chang, and other mentors, we were able to serve 64 people. We are extremely thankful for this opportunity and would like to thank the Hope of Christ Church in Fremont for allowing us to provide this service to their members.
